Mindful Musical Experience | Daniel Tyler Pohnke | TEDxVail

Reviewer: Denise RQ I began my journey as a musician echoing one clear hole
that I had inside my heart. It was as if every song
and every gesture spoke one phrase, “Please love me.” Then on my thirtieth birthday,
at a concert of one of my musical heroes, I noticed that his drunken performance
echoed that very same thing. And that triggered
something new inside of me. From that point, my life and my music went on a new path. A path that would lead me
to live for long stretches of time in India, Israel, Germany. (Laughter) And Thailand. Most importantly, a path that led me to me. That place where every lyric,
every frequency, every melody of my life goes deeper. And I look inside, and I say, “I see you. I love you.” Naturally, that expands out
to my friends, family, and fans. “I see you. I love you.” So, from that point, I began to experience
the transformational power of music, and the effects that it had on my mental,
emotional, and vibrational fields. (Breathing out) It is amazing, and science backs me up on this with studies that show that music
affects us in so many ways: it releases hormones in the brain
that can eas the rehab process, it increases performance levels
both in sports and academics, it helps heal
emotional and physical pains, it increases productivity, enhances visual and verbal skills, slows down the brain aging process. We all want that! (Laughter) And I could go on and on and on and on, but to sum it up:
the melody affects our emotions, the frequency affects
our vibrational field and the lyrics affect
our conscious and subconscious mind. So, I began to watch
my audiences very, very closely. And it was amazing. I watched how people responded to the different frequencies
and the different melodies. I watched people who barely spoke English open up to the uplifting messages
and close down to the harsh language, and I watched myself
do the very same thing. My music and my life were forever changed. So, today I offer you
the incredible gift that is music to take you deeper through mindful listening. So, please, close your eyes. And, if you’re watching from home, please close your eyes. (Guitar music) Take a long deep breath into the belly. Slowly exhale all the oxygen
out of the body. (Guitar music) For the next few minutes,
I invite you to look inside and observe how
the frequencies fill the space, how the melodies move into your heart, and how the lyrics
that pass through my lips resonate with your own experience in life. And as the last note of this song
leaves my fingertips, and echoes out the wood of my guitar, hold the applause for just a few seconds. Let’s allow silence to fill the room
for a moment of stillness. Until I utter those words
that I so often used to express my gratitude
for this absolute miracle that is life. Thank you.
