Matthieu Ricard – Why Study Buddhism?

I feel that Buddhism was addressing what we call the main question of life. Why Study Buddhism? Why should I continue to live? Of course, I never felt any kind of depression, wishing to abridge my life, but at the same time, you may know how you don’t want to spend your life, like a boring, meaningless life. But when you are 20, you may not know what is the best way to use your life, and so when I met my great teachers, it became clear–yes, I didn’t want to waste my life, but I also now had a sense of direction.
Why? Because when you are in the presence of
such great masters, and nowadays of course His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a perfect example of that, then you see right in front of you what lies at the end of the path. The messenger has become the message. You know, not just empty words, ‘getting to perfection’ and ‘progressing to enlightenment’– but you have a living example right in front of you. So you know for sure that that way is possible. Now, it’s up to you how much determination, how much confidence, how much of your whole being you’ll put into it. It’s up to you, but at least
the path is clear.
