Justification by Faith Alone: Martin Luther and Romans 1:17

He says, “Here in it,” in the gospel,
“the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, ‘the just
shall live by faith.'” A verse taken from the book of Habakkuk in the Old Testament
that is cited three times in the New Testament. As Luther would stop short and say, “What
does this mean, that there’s this righteousness that is by faith, and from faith to faith?
What does it mean that the righteous shall live by faith?” Which again as I said was
the thematic verse for the whole exposition of the gospel that Paul sets forth here in
the book of Romans. And so, the lights came on for Luther. And he began to understand
that what Paul was speaking of here was a righteousness that God in His grace was making
available to those who would receive it passively, not those who would achieve it actively, but
that would receive it by faith, and by which a person could be reconciled to a holy and
righteous God. Now there was a linguistic trick that was
going on here too. And it was this, that the Latin word for justification that was used
at this time in church history was—and it’s the word from which we get the English word
justification—the Latin word justificare. And it came from the Roman judicial system.
And the term justificare is made up of the word justus, which is justice or righteousness,
and the verb, the infinitive facare, which means to make. And so, the Latin fathers understood
the doctrine of justification is what happens when God, through the sacraments of the church
and elsewhere, make unrighteous people righteous. But Luther was looking now at the Greek word
that was in the New Testament, not the Latin word. The word dikaios, dikaiosune, which
didn’t mean to make righteous, but rather to regard as righteous, to count as righteous,
to declare as righteous. And this was the moment of awakening for Luther. He said, “You
mean, here Paul is not talking about the righteousness by which God Himself is righteous, but a righteousness
that God gives freely by His grace to people who don’t have righteousness of their own.” And so Luther said, “Woa, you mean the righteousness
by which I will be saved, is not mine?” It’s what he called a justitia alienum,
an alien righteousness; a righteousness that belongs properly to somebody else. It’s
a righteousness that is extra nos, outside of us. Namely, the righteousness of Christ.
And Luther said, “When I discovered that, I was born again of the Holy Ghost. And the
doors of paradise swung open, and I walked through.”

  1. I agree our own righteousness alone certainly is not enough. I believe it is only by the Grace of God we receive faith, and only by faith we can be justified. I also believe there is a significant difference between ‘only by faith’ and ‘by faith alone’.

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,  and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:14 – 17

Our works do not earn God’s grace as Grace is given freely to all. Our works merely manifest God’s grace into reality. Faith that Jesus Christ is the Son of God alone brings salvation? Interesting as even the Devil himself believes Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I am but a repenting sinner but Solo-Fide seems like a dangerous teaching to me. I believe faith and repentance are the gateway (by the Grace of God) to justification. May God lead us all!

  2. The doctrine of Luther was contrary to the doctrine of Christ and God. To "live by faith" means to obey all of the commandments of Jesus Christ. Jesus said that you can not call Him "Lord" and not do the things which He commanded. He said that He was dying for those who follow ALL of His commandments.

"Faith alone" is merely an excuse, a moral license, to reject Christ and the will of God. There is no such doctrine anywhere in the New Testament of Jesus Christ. The works that Paul spoke of are the rules of the Mosaic Law which Jesus superseded. The doctrine of "faith alone" is 100% human fabrication.

Anyone who preaches "faith alone" is making a farce of Christianity and a joke of the life of Jesus Christ.

You don't derive the truth of the Gospels by exegetic subtraction. And in this case it is the absolute and total subtraction of all of the words of Jesus Christ Himself.

  3. 12/10 for this restating of the Gospel of Justification by Faith Plus Nothing. The preacher like Paul is "determined to know nothing but Christ and Him Crucified".

  4. Romans 4:1-5 HCSB

What then can we say that Abraham, our physical ancestor, has found? If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to brag about — but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness. Now to the one who works, pay is not considered as a gift, but as something owed. But to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who declares the ungodly to be righteous, his faith is credited for righteousness.

  5. I think the confusion in all of this comes when a person says, "faith alone" and people think it means "faith divorced and isolated from everything." In reality, Faith and Love are married, but it's "only Faith" which receives justifying grace from God. Then, Love gives back to God in thanks. So, Faith receives and Love gives back. Faith divorced from Love doesn't even exist. "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace." -Jesus

  6. James 2:24-26       Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)

24 Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only?

25 And in like manner also Rahab the harlot, was not she justified by works, receiving the messengers, and sending them out another way?

26 For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead.

  7. Its real simple peoples. Getting baptised in the name of the father, son & holy spirit  is a work and without this work your faith alone just simply will not justify your salvation.

  8. James 2:24– You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. (New International Version)

  9. We are justified by faith alone apart from works.
James is speaking about justification before man not God.

James is tricky if you read too fast.

  10. In any study of Justification by Faith, (of which I believe) the book of James, chapter 2 is essential in also studying to gain a balanced understanding of the relationship between faith & works. Therefore, we won't find ourselves in a far left or right ditch as so many others have.

14 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?
15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing,
16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?
17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
18 Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”
19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.
20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
21 Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22 You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.
23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.
24 So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
25 Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.
26 Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

  11. So Luther's primary error it seems was to fail to realize that for God, to "declare" something (as in the Greek word) and to "make" (as in the Latin word) are the same thing, because God's word is creative, as when God speaks Light into actual existence. So when God Declares the sinner righteous, His creative word at the same time makes the sinner righteous. Thanks, R. C.!

  12. "Infused" righteousness only works if you believe there are folks walking around who are perfect. There are not.

IMPUTED righteousness is the singular mechanism for righeousness.

"Seek first the Kingdom of God, and HIS righteousness…
    "

  13. SOLA FIDE:
No where in the bible says you are saved by Faith alone(Sola fide)…
    Romans 11:6-7
But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
    Then look at Revelation…
    Revelation 20:12
And another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Now… take a look at Matthew
    Matthew 25:44
31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

  14. Romans clearly call this righteous "the righteousness of God" never "the righteousness of Christ".

  15. Luther was born again of the holy ghost, and the doors of paradise swung open, and he walked through.
Anyone see the contradiction with that statement?

  16. JAMES 2:14-26

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[a]? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[b] and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

  17. Where in the bible does it say that every thing should be found in the bible??????
The bible was created in the 3rd Century everything was orally handed down before that in the sacred Tradition., deposit of faith. Jesus didn't go up to heaven telling the disciples "now don't forget to write a book!" It was a known fact that everything back then was taught orally through the apostles.

  18. People… the bible is wrong. Luther was a christian reformer. He pointed towards that which is wrong and changed it according to the will of jesus christ. Faith alone saves. There is nothing we can to do to be saved from our own sins. We sin because we are not 100% divine. Jesus was and he died for our sins.

  19. Sola Fide believer???

John 3:16.  "Believe" is a loaded word full of expectations for a son or daughter of GOD.  This one is my favorite inspired by the Holy Spirit through my "Faithful" OBEDIENCE.

    WHAT DOES “FAITH” REALLY MEAN???

To properly interpret Sacred Scripture you have to understand the verse IN CONTEXT of what the author was intending to convey during his particular time period and culture not ours, the verse within the chapter, the chapter within the book, and the book within the Bible as a whole.  Are you aware St. Paul as ”a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth” 1 Timothy 2:7 was constantly writing to defend Gentiles from Mosaic Ceremonial “Works of the Law” (circumcision).  Are you aware St. Paul in Romans and Galatians was arguing for the Gentiles to be accepted strictly on "faith" in Jesus Christ through using Abraham as an example who was “justified” and made “righteous” on “faith” yet still uncircumcised???

St. Paul was emphasizing in Romans only "ONE SIDE" of a two sided coin (One side FAITH and the other side WORKS).  St. Paul used the "faith" side to argue for the Gentiles to be accepted and grafted in.  The other side of the coin "WORKS" was written about in the Book of James (Book of James was written for people like you who were misinterpreting St. Paul in Romans).  James 2:24 "You see a man is justified by works, and NOT BY FAITH ALONE".   AGAIN, THE BIBLE, THE WORD OF GOD SAYS "NOT BY FAITH ALONE".   "Faith and Works" which Jesus Christ clearly taught and the Catholic Church continues to teach in obedience.

For example, you all seem to miss Paul's introduction in Romans 2:6-7 "FOR HE WILL RENDER TO EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS WORKS: TO THOSE WHO BY PATIENCE IN WELL-DOING SEEK FOR GLORY AND HONOR AND IMMORTAILY, HE WILL GIVE ETERNAL LIFE".

Now, wait a minute you just said all I have to do is "believe"???

Luke 6:37-38 and Matthew 7:1-2 "Judge NOT, that you be not judged.  For with the Judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get".  So now, I cannot judge harshly otherwise I will be judged harshly by GOD.

Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, BUT HE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN”.  Now, I have to do the Father’s will to even enter the “Kingdom of Heaven”???

Matthew 10:33 “But WHOEVER DENIES ME BEFORE MEN, I WILL ALSO DENY BEFORE MY FATHER who is in heaven”.  Now, I have to never deny Jesus before men or risk rejection myself???

Mark 16:16 “He who believes AND IS BAPTIZED will be saved.  See 1 Peter 3:21 also.  Now, I have to be baptized to be saved???

John 13:34 “A NEW COMMANDMENTS I GIVE TO YOU, THAT YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER; EVEN AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, THAT YOU ALSO LOVE ONE ANOTHER”.  How did Jesus love us???  Did He say it “one time” and do nothing else???  Nope, Jesus Christ showed us what LOVE IS by being selfless sacrificial  and emptying Himself out on the cross for us !!!

1 John 3:18-19 “Children, let us love not in word and speech, BUT IN DEED AND IN TRUTH. BY THIS WE SHALL KNOW ARE WE OF THE TRUTH”.  What does this clearly say about a one-time verbal profession of faith???

Matthew 7:19 "EVERY TREE THAT DOES NOT BEAR GOOD FRUIT IS CUT DOWN AND THROWN INTO THE FIRE"  Now, I have to bear good fruit otherwise I risk damnation???

John 15:8 “By this my Father is glorified, that YOU BEAR MUCH FRUIT, AND SO PROVE TO BE MY DISCIPLES”.  Once again, I have to “bear fruit” and now “prove to be” Jesus Christ’s disciple.

Colossians 1:10 “LEAD A LIFE WORTHY OF THE LORD, FULLY PLEASING TO HIM, BEARING FRUIT IN EVERY GOOD WORK and increasing knowledge of GOD”  There’s that “FRUIT” thing again that one must “do” to be “FULLY PLEASING” to GOD.

John 5:29 “THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD, TO THE RESURRECTION OF LIFE, AND THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL, TO THE RESURRECTION OF JUDGMENT”.  Now, I have to do “GOOD” and avoid “EVIL” or sin to avoid “JUDGMENT”???

John 3:5  "TRULY, TRULY I SAY TO YOU, UNLESS ONE IS BORN OF WATER AND THE SPIRIT, HE CANNOT ENTER THE KINGDOM OF GOD".   Now, I have to be REBORN of "Water (Baptism) and SPIRIT(Laying of Hands)" to even enter the ONE “Kingdom of GOD”???

John 6:54 "HE WHO EATS MY FLESH AND DRINKS MY BLOOD HAS ETERNAL LIFE".   Now, I have to eat the “Lamb of GOD” (John 1:29, 1 Corinthians 5:7, 1 Peter 1:19) to be saved???

1 Corinthians 11:27-29 “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the LORD in an UNWORTHY MANNER will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the LORD.  Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks WITHOUT DISCERNING THE BODY EATS AND DRINKS JUDGMENT UPON HIMSELF”.    Now, I have to be “worthy” to partake of the “Lamb of GOD” otherwise I risk JUDGMENT???

James 1:22, 25 “BE DOERS OF THE WORD, AND NOT HEARERS ONLY, DECEIVING YOURSELVES”…”BUT HE WHO LOOKS IN THE PERFECT LAW (referring to John 13:34), THE LAW OF LIBERTY, AND PERSEVERES, BEING NO HEARER THAT FORGETS BUT A DOER THAT ACTS, HE SHALL BE BLESSED IN HIS DOING”.  James who was one of the three most beloved disciples in Jesus’s “inner circle” what does he clearly teach here???

Romans 15:18 “For I will not dare to speak of anything except  what Jesus Christ has accomplished through me TO LEAD THE GENTILES TO OBEDIENCE BY WORD AND DEED”.  St. Paul now emphasizing I need to be OBEDIENT BY WORD AND DEED???

Philippians 2:12  "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, WORK OUT YOUR OWN SALVATION WITH FEAR AND TREMBLING".  Wait a minute, I thought you said St. Paul said all I need to do is "believe" and I am saved???   The Bible and St. Paul here is telling me I have to continue in "Good Works" to "WORK OUT YOUR SALVATION"???

2 Thessalonians 1:8 “INFLICTING VENGENCE upon those who do not know GOD and those WHO DO NOT OBEY THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS”.   Now, I have to OBEY THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST”???

2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, SO THAT EACH MAY RECEIVE GOOD OR EVIL, ACCORDING TO WHAT HE HAS DONE IN THE BODY”.   So, now I HAVE TO DO GOOD???

**John 3:36  “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, BUT WHOEVER DISOBEYS THE SON WILL NOT SEE LIFE, BUT THE WRATH OF GOD REMAINS UPON HIM”.***

**John 5:29 “THOSE WHO HAVE DONE GOOD, TO THE RESURRECTION OF LIFE, AND THOSE WHO HAVE DONE EVIL, TO THE RESURRECTION OF DEATH”**

John 8:51 “Truly, Truly, I say to you, IF ANY ONE KEEPS MY WORD, he will never see death”

Hebrews 5:9 “He became the source of eternal salvation TO ALL WHO OBEY HIM”.

Acts 5:32 “And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN TO THOSE WHO OBEY HIM”

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.  "Believe" is a loaded word full of expectations for the sons and daughters of GOD.  "BELIEVE" really means to "OBEY".  Faith is only the first step towards Heaven, and LOVE is the second step which is an ACTION out of OBEDIENCE.   FAITH AND WORKS just as the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church teaches.

  20. Love it. This is what changed fundamentally for me when I was born again; I went from having a nature inclined to works subsumed under the heading of"faith", to a conviction of sin-and-works state, to grace alone through faith alone in the finished work of Christ alone. Off came the veil and I was raised a new creation under grace.

  21. If you teach that a person is declared righteous by faith alone but not by a faith that is alone you are teaching salvation by works and will be annihilated on Judgement Day

  22. "saved by faith and works; not faith alone" (James 2:24) “All the dead were judged according to their deeds.” (Revelation 20: 13) We cannot believe our way to heaven nor work our way to heaven. But through Jesus Christ, if our works (deeds), through our faith, is to do God's will for ourselves during the present moment, we can obtain salvation. Jesus did not die to legalize sin. Faith alone = believing our way to heaven. Works alone = working our way to heaven. Faith alone and works alone is unbiblical and a false gospel. "the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires" (2 Timothy 4: 3)

  23. hey
    peace be with you
Faith can never be alone or it is nothing; it requires Love (1 Cor 13:2)
Love for Jesus Christ will bring us to obedience in his teachings (John 14:23-24)
Jesus tell us those who believe in him will do his works (John 14:12)
St James tells us our faith is completed by our works. (James 2:22)

Jesus paid the price for our sins (Rom 6:23) but eternal life goes to those who obey (Heb 5:9)
Faith alone is a false Gospel and those who are follow it are trying to walk the easy path but that leads to destruction (Matt 7:13-14)
Its fruit is apathy to obedience in God a very poor fruit (Matt 7:15-21)
    beware of false teachers

    God bless you

  24. "Now to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, His faith is credited as righteousness." – Romans 4:5
So if we are saved by even a single work of our own, then the Scriptures lie. I cannot accept that the Scriptures lie. Therefore, what James 2:24 must be talking about is the same thing that Peter talks about in His epistle and Paul talks about in his and John talks about in his. We do good works because we have been changed by God. We do good works because it is the proof of what God has already done. God changes us, and it is proven by our works. If there are no works, then there is no faith. Works do not justify us, they prove we have our justification. There's a big difference there.

"He has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire." – 2 Peter 1:4
"No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God." – 1John 1:9
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." – Ephesians 2:10
"We love because he first loved us." – 1 John 4:19
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments." – John 14:15
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." – Ephesians 2:8-10
"I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” – John 8:24

  25. The words " FAITH ALONE " is ONLY found in the book of James

    James 2:
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?
15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.
16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?
17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?
21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.
24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by "FAITH ALONE"..

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?
26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

So where does this idea of FAITH ALONE LEADS to justification came from?. "Sola Fide" is NOT Biblical.

  26. God declaring, reckoning, regarding.. someone as righteous…. does NOT come through sacraments.   Indeed, it comes straight from God to the believer, through no vehicle or medium.   U. Zwingli expressed it best, "I believe, yea I know, that all the sacraments are so far from conferring grace that they do not even convey or distribute it."

  27. If you believe your works save you even a little bit you believe a false gospel Eph 2:8-9, Isaiah 64:6, Rom 11:6. FREE gift, works are NOT for salvation but comes AFTER salvation. Faith and works is a false gospel it cannot save, you cannot save yourself. Be very careful, you CANNOT and you will NOT boast before God what you have done. Salvation is ALL of God, so give glory to God ALONE.

  28. For confused Romanists

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

    This couldn't be more clear.

Now if you see James as saying we are justified by works you have to admit to one of the following options

    Paul is wrong here
There's a contradiction in the Bible

Paul is so clear here that I would advise you to go back and re read James again

  29. Who though being saved by Gods grace and having faith in jesus continue to practice things they know christ died for?if you are saved you reconize sin and hate it but unbelievers continue doing them and have no guilt over them . but doing works does not save us only in what christ has done .we are saved sinners we are going to sin but thanks be to God for our lord and savior jesus Christ who died for our sins .so we cling to the jesus.

  30. Saving faith is NO saving faith without repentance!

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Proverbs 28:13

Also, faith comes BEFORE regeneration! Deny this and you call the Bible a liar!

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10

  31. EARLY CHURCH FATHER CLEMENT OF ROME (AD35-99) SUPPORTS SOLA FIDE:
1 Clement clearly talks about biblical doctrine of justification through faith alone:
“And we, too, being called by His will in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, nor by our own wisdom, or understanding, or godliness, or works which we have wrought in holiness of heart; but by that faith through which, from the beginning, Almighty God has justified all men; to whom be glory for ever and ever.
    Amen” (1 Clement, 32).

  32. Faith in Christ means faith in everything Christ taught, including that good works are necessary (Matthew 25:31-46), that commandments must be kept (John 14:15), that Peter was the first pope (Matthew 16:18), that the Church has teaching and rule- making authority (Matthew 16:19), that Purgatory exists (Matthew 5:25 and Luke 11:58-59), that salvation can be lost (Matthew 13:3-23), and that the Holy Eucharist really is His literal Body and Blood (John 6:48-61).

  33. "Faith alone" won't save anyone. We are saved by grace. Who gets the grace? Who gets God's mercy?

"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)

Jesus did not tell His disciples to preach "faith alone." Read what Jesus said:

"Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:45-47)

If we'll obey and repent our past sins will be erased and we'll have redemption, by grace, from the death penalty already earned for those past sins:

"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV. That's right, our sins were not blotted out when Jesus died on the cross).

Without repentance we have no redemption and will surely, hopelessly perish, paying our death penalty ourselves. That's why Jesus warned, "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5).

It is through faith that we can choose to "come to God" on His terms. It's the choice – to come to God on His terms – that matters. Without faith we are unable to make that choice:

"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)

"For by grace are ye saved through faith . . . " (Ephesians 2:8). Through faith, not just because you have faith.

  34. Faith working by love in obedience to the truth purifies the soul. Faith to faith means Faithfulness to Faithfulness. Its faithful obedience to faithful obedience. Fidelity to fidelity. He knows this but hes a liar. Your faith that obeys is considered righteousness because You uphold the moral requirements of the law through faithful obedience to the truth. And no I'm not a rocket scientist.

  35. Went to Bible study MY EYES ARE OPEN. I BELONG

TO Church of Christ. We assume that is b the name of the church it is but it's not. Christ Church follows the BIBLE. LUTHERAN , Catholic, Morman, Baptist and others have other books they turn to. But the only book we need is the Bible. Other churches have synod's or have a human name under them. But what would it be like to just read THE BIBLE NOT JUST SKIM OR READ IT SOALY WITH OUT ANY OTHER BOOK? MY EYES ARE OPEN. Matthew 7:21-23 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many [a]miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
ITS ALL ABOUT THE BIBLE. NOT LUTHER, OR WESLEY, OR JOSEPH SMITH.
Genesis 2:16-18 21st Century King James Version (KJ21)

    16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it. For in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die.”
    We see this
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
( The devil. ) GOD GIVES US THE BIBLE BUT THE DEVIL DISTORTS THE WORD.
IF WE READ THE BIBLE WE KNOW WHAT GOD SAYS
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”( Man)
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”THE DEVIL SPOKE THE TRUTH, SPEAKS THE TRUTH EVERY SUNDAY)
He twisted what The Lord said Matthew 7:21 King James Version (KJV)

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Not faith only we do not become Christian just by saying sinners prayer
James 2:20 King James Version (KJV)

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Mark 16:15-16 King James Version (KJV)

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Acts 2:38 King James Version (KJV)

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:39 King James Version (KJV)

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”[b] 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
    Strong's #907: baptizo (pronounced bap-tid'-zo)

from a derivative of 911; to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism:–Baptist, baptize, wash.

IS YOUR CHURCH OR ASSEMBLY UNDER GODS NAME OR SOMEONE'S ELSE NAME? I operate BIBLE ONLY IF ITS NOT IN THE BIBLE THEN I DONT WONT FROM THIS DAY FORWARD ATTEND ANY OTHER CHURCH THAT DOSE NOT DO WHAT GOD( THE BIBLE SAYS) MY EYES ARE OPEN.
The truth hurts but I'd rather have it hurt now then when you die end up in hell because

Acts 5:29 King James Version (KJV)

29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

  36. According to Jesus at Mark 16:16 only two things are necessary for salvation: faith and baptism. But what is faith? Faith is belief in Christ AND EVERYTHING CHRIST TAUGHT, including that good works are necessary for salvation (Matthew 25:31-46).

  37. This is what I call a Phd. Christian. Only the Holy Spirit will reveal the Truth because humans get stuck on Only, Alone, Sola, when God is Dynamic.
