Bishop Barron on “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus”

well every once in a while in the kind of extraordinary way a video will just explode will make its way all over the country it will sweep like wildfire through the virtual world and the most recent example is phenomenon is a video kind of slick we produce video of a young man in a leather jacket and he’s kind of half rapping half of speaking a very simple poem about Jesus and religion more precisely why Jesus came to abolish religion how Jesus stands over and against religion well this some you know short may 5 minute simple video with a very simple argument has inexplicably in my judgment become this overnight sensation as I record these words I think it’s around 13 million views on YouTube well I first heard about it through a student in mind the seminary said hey there’s this video going around maybe you should comment on it so I watched it and I remember thinking this video has gotten so much attention go figure but then I got flooded with requests on my site on the Facebook page father you got to say something about this video so here goes here’s my my reaction to it but what it represents is a kind of simplistic expression of evangelicalism it’s a it’s a view that has its roots in the thought of Martin Luther you go back to the 16th century Reformation and what do you find in Luther well as a central idea that we are justifying or were saved now by our works rather through faith by grace accepted in faith so there’s the center of Luther’s of Reformation we’re not saved through the church we’re not saved through institutions the liturgies and sacraments or moral effort we’re saying by accepting in faith the grace of Christ now this basic idea led Luther in some of his texts anyway certainly a lot of his followers to demonize much of ecclesial life so things like sacraments and liturgies and masses and and even the call for good works were kind of demonized as a distraction from the grace that comes from from Christ alone so all of this constitutes the religion that many evangelicals to this day are against including this young man so here’s the militancy in favor of Jesus in His grace and against religion now you know what’s interesting are the political and cultural implications of this view because it begins as a theological perspective but it has huge ramifications in the world beyond the world of religion it is absolutely no accident that freedom becomes the great watchword of modern politics think of our own country you know is the land of the free if there’s one value we cherish is freedom well trace it back behind Jefferson and Rousseau and those people go right back to Martin Luther his maybe most revolutionary text is called the freedom of a Christian so as the Christian stands free of all this religious institutionalism so now it morphed into the political view that we should stand free of oppressive political and cultural institutions so our own country for example is born this great act of anti institutional revolutionary violence helping to explain by the way why this videos has such great play in America because this idea of you know freedom from the institution appeal is very deeply and profoundly to the American and modern soul okay so was a Catholic make of all this I would say actually not very much go right back to Luther’s central idea I mean to be blunt about it Luther conveniently overlooked a plethora of biblical texts that militate against his position on justification by grace through faith in fact as Cardinal Avery Dulles pointed out the only time justification by grace through faith alone is mentioned the Bible it’s explicitly condemned look in the letter of James for that but no for example Matthew 25 the great parable of the sheep and the goats what do you find salvation depending not really on faith so much but on the quality of our love especially our love toward the poorest and most marginalized and think – of Paul himself whom Luther claimed as his principal inspiration the st. Paul we spoke about justification by grace and apart from the law also said if I have faith enough to move the mountains but have not love I am nothing an extraordinary claim isn’t it in first Corinthians the st. Paul who had a very intense personal experience of conversion through Christ also spoke very eloquently of our participation in the mystical body of Jesus by which he meant the densely textured life of the church it’s not a sort of privatized individualism that Paul’s advocating but it’s very rich ecclesial sensibility and let’s go to Jesus himself now because a young man claims in this video that Jesus is against you know religion well okay the same Jesus who railed against the Pharisees against certain violations and and misuses of religion in his own time that same Jesus who railed against the Pharisees also said I’ve come not to abolish the law but I’ve come to fulfill it the same Jesus who yes overturned the tables in the temple and said I’m going to tear down this place also said in three days I will rebuild it see here’s my point was Jesus against the corruptions of religion in his own time sure in fact often bitterly so did he know about the ways that institutional religion goes bad of course and that s how he’s playing all these polemics against the Pharisees and so on but but but Jesus was not simply against religion in fact he was a loyal law-abiding Jew Jesus in fact said I don’t want to abolish it I want to fulfill it in other words he took the very best of Israelite religion took the best of Jewish institution if you want think of law covenant temple sacrifice priesthood all of that he didn’t abolish it he fulfilled it he brought it up into a new and higher synthesis so the young man in the video if he’s against the corruptions of institutional religion up and down the ages to the present day he’s got an ally in me I’m with him you know the thing finding corruptions in the religious institution of Christianity over 2,000 years it’s like shooting fish in a barrel I mean that’s not hard to find and being against it is kind of like being against rotten eggs I mean who isn’t against institutional corruption but if he’s advocating a kind of individualist spirituality that ignores the thousands of ties that bind us sacramentally liturgically and institutionally to each other if he’s trying to divorce Jesus from his mystical body the church then he does not have an ally in me he has a pretty fierce opponent in fact the mainstream of the Catholic tradition for 2,000 years stands strongly against him you know here’s something strikes me there are a lot of New Age people today famously who want spirituality without religion and their evangelical Christians who want Jesus without religion the problem is both those views end up with an abstraction but the one thing the real Jesus is not is an abstraction the word became flesh and now that incarnation is prolonged over space and time precisely in and through the church sacrament liturgy the mystical body the lives of the saints the love we have for each other that’s precisely where the real Jesus is apparent to us so I would say against this young man Jesus did not come to abolish religion Jesus came to fulfill religion

  1. The Lutheran raises her hand: "Grace accepted by faith" is a pretty bare explanation, and we don't "demonize" Sacraments or liturgies. A sinner is justified by grace alone (sola gratia) through faith alone (sola fide) for the sake of Christ alone (solus Christus), a truth revealed to us in Scripture alone (sola Scriptura) — puts a bit more flesh on that bone. The Gospel of Christ (verbum audible) and Sacraments (verbum visible) are the means of grace. Prayer and works are faith in action, therefore, faith without such is a dead faith. This includes corporate worship, sharing God's gifts, acts of service and devotion, evangelizing, etc. Luther never wanted to split from the Catholic church; he wanted an honest debate, and he thought the Pope would be horrified to learn how people were selling indulgences in his name. I mean, talk about knowing good AND evil. Sheesh. Mistakes were made. What's done is done.

  2. The supremacy of the concept of love over faith is not a textual argument to justify ecclesiastical rites. Ecclesiastical dogma is not the same as love. As a catholic I find that flaw in Bishop Barron's argument.

  3. Bishop Barron, thank you for your wisdom on the subject and the much needed clarification of what Jesus was against when it came to religion. Too many people think Jesus hated religion. No, not a popular idea before this overnight sensation who made it sound credible or appealing but that's just it, and all it is, it just sounds good (the poem). But more importantly are the facts and we can count on a true credible source and expert on the topic to give us just that, the truth Bishop Barron. Thank you again.

  4. Jesus taught Believe in him for SALVATION its that simple, the gospel of John is the evangelical gospel, im an ex catholic and now im a born again christian by the grace of God through faith in Jesus, religion is rituals and works to get to God, faith is God coming down and redeeming man. the church is invisible its not a building,
Constantine founded the Roman Catholic church 325AD, catholicism is not CHRISTIANITY as we read of in the bible, no one prayed to mary or dead saints,
    catholicism is 99% UNBIBLICAL

  5. Without religion, you have infinite number of thoughts and interpretations, some that are superficial … ultimately resulting in utter chaos. History has shown that time and again.

  6. the church in Venezuela and Latin America has given an excellent teaching of morality and good manners, not to mention the many works of charity such as orphanages, leprosariums, nursing homes, hospitals, alcoholic and drug addicts, universities, schools, which are today's tests forceful that a society without God and his church would end in an anarchy.

  7. Jesus as a Jew always boggled my mind. How can a person who was born into a religion but then later on be the subject of another new religion.
    What is logic in religion?

Btw, I am a believer, a Catholic, but religious catholic education is very poor in the Philippines unlike other religions. When you question something for the sake of curiosity or further understanding, they will tell you it's a sin to question tradition or beliefs.

  8. I get what both sides are saying… really like many things in scripture. It is a balancing act. You can’t really have one with out the other (faith and works). By grace are we saved, but all of the saved simply do works because the love of Christ is in them. It’s a tough concept to wrap ones head around. But works don’t save a person, it is Christ’s forgiveness of sins. But this doesn’t take away from the importance of works. Everyone who is saved should do works, as for it is their saintly duty through faith.

I think this sums up my thoughts on the subject. Tell me what you all think!

  9. 7 Reasons Why Roman Catholics can NEVER become Christians: Mass, Mary Worship, Traditions before God’s Holy Bible, Pagan Violations of the Second Commandment, Sacraments to Help Earn Salvation, Fake Purgatory, Paganism from Other False Religions.

Come Out of her (RCC is a false, pagan religion started by Satan.), become a Christian, and have a personal relationship with the Son of God, The Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. Faith is nothing without love yeah true but if you have so much faith in God and If God is love so what do you call it? Does it connect with the parable of the ship and goat? How does it contradict with what Paul just said and to be honest religion is just starting wars like what it is saying in Revelations. Its just fulfilling the prophecy. Thanks to those people that just argue and argue about faith and God and of what is true cause its all the same just you have faith on him just have love on him just be obedient living through his words and judging things not by your understanding but through the help of him. Thats it why we need to quarrel for the same thing? We are believing in him so why would we quarrel for him? Isn't it nonsense?

  11. An unbiased source. Rape any kids lately, then have the very ch right to coger t up, thteaten lawsuits against the kids & patente?

  12. Martin Luther was apposed to the terrible wrongs in the church , like buying a sin pardon in advance.( indulgences ) there needed to be a correction in the church corruption was rampant. Of course Bishop Barron is defending his beliefs

  13. First time I ever heard a Pharisee comment on a YouTube video😂, I'm saved by faith through Grace bro, not by works,

  14. For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13

  15. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

  16. Let me guess. Does this guy have a pastor, a group of fellow Jesus believers who they gather together regularly around, a weekly perhaps coming together surrounding evangelical beliefs of the salvation Jesus brings? Hmmm……where have I heard that before. It starts with an R but I can't quite put my finger on it.

  17. The church of institutions has to respect the delicate germination of an aspirational Christ-like artist/figure using fresh language to create a pure community , the message can be rough & raw, but it will be refined by genuine feedback connection , love and spirit.

The church & community is supposed to be a higher resolutional view of biological/spiritual/physiological/philosophical systems, where the verbal teachings transcend into actual reality and heightened energies & senses through song/chanting/specific & purposeful prayer/visual stimulus & meaningful sensory activity, real deep awaking of the soul and not just a checkbox exercise on the sheepish/goatish weekend.

Simple activities which are core to positive assist of faith are removed from there true meaning and purposeful ritual like the "Our Father" and self blessings!

Many churches fail to instill Clear Christ-like practices strong enough to last a week within the individual! The church has run it natural course and requires a complete overhaul alike the bible, as once when it was so full of flaws beyond individual fixes.

The archaic language and general mismatch to modern human behavior is obvious and all the commercially adopted rebrand techniques will always miss the mark! A revolutionary pivot is required and unlike abstract statistically driven governance approach, the minority that pass through the cracks are the key areas of highly focused & tuning fork solutions to be found, ground up synthesis assuming no specific direction to avoid previous flawed quantitative assumptions!

  18. Sounds like Bishop Barron is just trying to defend the Catholic institution! He's correct when he says our walk needs to match our talk. BUT we do good works not to earn God's favor but as a result of God's favor. And this is why relationship needs to be emphasized over religion. Religion can help us in that walk but if we are not careful it can become legalism and occultism , where other humans once again try and have authority over other humans!!!!! When the gospel has truly taken root in your life it will produce the fruit of Godliness but you don't need an institution to make it happen RATHER you need the Holy Spirit!!! If you know the truth the truth shall set you free!😇

  19. I understand where your coming from also pastor. .. but i was a catholic and never understood salvation. So i thought as millions of others think your saved by works. That's what i got from the catholics. So if they could come together in some way without Mary being the way through Christ. ..then ok..or i have to come through the priest go to Christ. .. . How i see it is you have gone farther from scripture than that young man. You guys need to pull the mote out of your eyes before you can point the finger at others. You have so many ways to Christ without Christ really being the true source

  20. First of all Jesus fulfilled the law 100%. Second my question to you would be how did Jesus treat the religious leaders of his day. John the Baptist called them vipers and snakes. The just shall live by faith. Not by works.

  21. Speaking of corruption…. why do you refer to yourself as father? The scripture says that we are joint heirs with Christ…. he taught us to pray to THE Father through the Holy Spirit…. are you above Christ? I have but one spiritual Father…. and it's not you. When Christ died on the cross, the curtain of the Holy of Holies was rent from top to bottom meaning that we no longer need to go through a high priest but could go directly to our heavenly father. This is just one example of where the catholic church is corrupt and stands in the way of what Christ came to do.

  22. I think that all people need to read the Bible for themselves to find the answers. If not it is all subject to the interpretation of another human. Therefore it will have there own rules!!

  23. I suggest everyone try contemplative prayer …go alone for 7 days (I've done so)pray commune with the beloved and if you cannot make it past a day go to mass keep trying pretty soon you'll have him kissed into your heart. You'll fall in love inside the catholic church. Music ,Heavan divine, grace, love, his holy cross(I am being in the mystical body) I go somewhere when I hear catholic. I love being catholic ha ha ha Eucharist

  24. Please comment on the YouTube channel "Global Witness" and others like it that have thousands of followers by listening to individuals interpreting the bible in their own ways, which some are dangerous but some are all about love. Beyond that I listen to you talk about the Catholic religion, which I feel is the "Godfather" of Christian faith…I was guided by my parents through the Lutheran church. I believe God is in me because I could concentrate on him and not the strict man made guidelines that have pushed so many of my friends away not only from Catholicism but any religion for that matter after they grew up Catholic with strict rules. Then you have to deal with the fact that the Catholic religion wears a big black eye that ironically could ruin the Catholic religion and many other Jesus followers because of the way pedophilia has run rampant in many prominent Catholic churches with many prominent Catholic priests and was never dealt with properly still till this day. That's why a reasonable guy like you is extremely important and why I listen to you frequently. Thank you , Godspeed.

  25. I did agree with him about that church isnt supposed to be a museum for the well but a hospital for the weak. It seems like all churches worry about is looking like a christian but when it time to actually help someone they dont. I have a relationship with Christ myself and i have this opinion of churches and it sads me that this is the way it is cuz that is not the way Yeshua wants us to be cuz that will not save souls that is supposed to be our mission unless anyone forgot.

  26. First Jesus is a false name his real name was Yeshua
Second: salvation throughworks was a old testement idea in other words before Yeshua was born so people only did what the church told them all throughout Yeshua's life the church called Him a bastphemer. Would have killed Him and His mother Mary if they knew about her when she want pregnant cuz she said Elohim (God) gave her the child which they would assume she committed adultery and she would have been stoned (had rocks thrown at her til she died) Also the King(who was the Pharisees ruler) tryed by having all of the baby boys in the town he was born killed
So yea the church was really against Yeshua. And think about this if Yeshua was raised in this time period and said and done the same things and acted the same way do you think hed be treated differently or the same.
Thirdly Yeshua died on the cross for our sin so we dont have to take the punishment of our action we deserve. Yeshua said in the bible. The most we can do is filthy rags.
Another quote do not rely on man because man will always faulter but rely on God. Or even this one: All shall fall short of the glory of God. So it is not out works that get us into heaven its our relationship with Christ.

  27. I get where that young man was coming from . I was the same way at his age . I was tailoring Jesus to my lifestyle . When I think back I have to laugh at how silly I was .

  28. It couldn't be the churches silence on institutional pedophilia. I no longer trust the structure of the church!

  29. I came out of Catholicism. Dead Religion False Doctrine . Jesus said to Keep his Commandments. 1. Tho shall not worship Idles.
( 'God is a Spirit and must be Worship in Spirit" *quote : Billy Graham*)

  30. Good morning Joe Schmoe. Let me open with that I am not a Protestant nor do I follow ANY organized religion. I follow Our Lord Jesus Christ. The "Old Jewish canon" that you say I follow that deny Jesus Christ." I do not know why you say that but I will say that whatever version of the bible you read or the Jewish people read , Jesus Christ is in every book from Genesis to Revelation AMEN! Some Christians call these beautiful accounts "similitude's" or characteristics , I see Jesus Christ! In Genesis 3:15 He is the seed of a woman that crushed satans head, in Genesis 22:8 He is the Lamb that The Most High would provide for Abraham , He is the blood covering In Exodus 12:13 , He is The Living Water from the rock in Exodus 17:6, He is the merciful and forgiving in Exodus 34:7 and can keep going but why dont you do this Joe? When I grew up as a Catholic, i held the bible for the priest to read from and we were NEVER taught to read to ourselves. We were taught that the hierarchy were the only ones worthy of true interpretation of scripture and teaching. ask yourself why is this? Then ask Our Heavenly Father that same question from your heart in your own words Joe and He will show you in His word for He is the Word. Joe you questioned me with one of my statements to Strive 4 about me thinking that he was more about religion than Christ Jesus and your response sir leads me to feel the same about you too. caring for the weak, sick, homeless etc etc. Yes indeed we as followers of Christ Jesus are to do these "works" and the Catholic church has and does all of these "works" all over the world…Do you? If so, thats great. Do you do them once a year with a church mission trip or retreat? The really important thing here Im trying to get to you but only the Holy Spirit can do this is that where is your heart Joe when doing these things we are called to do? Do you do them because thats what your suppose to do as a Catholic? Just like all the other "works" yall do such as repetitive prayers ( rosaries), confession booths , kissing graved images etc etc. Do you do all this because thats what your supposed to do as a follower of Jesus Christ? Joe everybody loves to quote James 2:20 Faith without works is dead. I tell you this only by the Power of The Spirit Of God that most people do not have a full understanding of this verse, including the protestants! First point. Faith without works means WITHOUT VISIBLE FAITH! Im sure you agree with that maybe? If people would read Gods Word (all the verses not just parts of them) They would see that Abraham was only justified righteous by his "visible" act of obedience when he was at the altar about to sacrifice Issac. He feared, loved and trusted God so much that he "wanted" to do this for God because He asked him to. In Luke 5:20" When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven." Joe ask yourself when your alarm goes off sunday mornings if you get up to go to church because thats what we Catholics do or because of want to hear the Word of God and praise His Holy name? 2nd point. Joe if any believer does not know, love The Lord Jesus Christ " with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" they will not be able to understand Gods Word true meanings. Think about that! Luke 10:27. Joe can you tell me where in the bible it says Catholic religion is the church of God! Nowhere! The word church in the Bible comes from the Greek word ecclesia, which means a called out company or assembly. Wherever it is used in the Bible it refers to people. We see three distinct groups of people in the Bible: Jews, Gentiles, and the church (1 Corinthians 10:31-33; Galatians 3:26-29). Jews are all born as descendants of Abraham through Isaac (Romans 9:6-7). Gentiles are all other people born who are not Jews.
When a Jew or a Gentile trusts Christ as their Savior, they are born again into God’s family, become a child of God, and are part of the church. They are no longer a Jew or a Gentile (Galatians 3:26-29). The wall of separation between Jew and Gentile is torn down and they become one body (Ephesians 2:14-16). Joe we are all parts of the body of Christ(the church) and Jesus Christ is the High Priest and we all as believers have Him dwelling inside of us and have a direct line of communication to our Heavenly Father, no need for a priest, bishops or popes when we pray in Jesus Christs name AMEN! This word "religion" Joe is how stive4, you and I are having this dialog. Its not ironic ! Its that God is in control of who's in control and He alone guides me through His Spirit Amen. Religion is man made Joe! Christianity is more than a religion; it is a relationship with Jesus Christ. John 15:9 says, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now continue in my love.” John 15:15, “I have called you friends.” John 17:24, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am.” John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends.” In John 10; Jesus makes several statements demonstrating His deep love for us — “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. I know my sheep and my sheep know me — and I lay down my life for the sheep.” Joe man is prone to error, we all fall short and sometimes a lot of "Christians" have been taught the wrong things whether maliciously or not thats why God Almighty is the one who calls us to Christ. Him alone. Only the Holy Spirit can give true understanding period!! ! 1 Cor 2:10-16 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. Last thing, Joe research all these things for yourself after praying and asking God to revel the truth to you in Jesus ' name. Also , you might want to reserch the words sunday, churches satan created and mass. Last be not least, Joe this whole message I have sent you, I have not be angry at all with you or your beliefs. I pray that you receive this with a soft heart and open mind to seek His word for yourself not mine. Thanks Joe

The reality is that we are not ancient Jews where one's entire being, from birth to death, was defined by the Law of Moses. Yet a great many who call themselves Christians take ancient Israel’s story and apply it to themselves. This does not align with reality; it is an error of mind. And the consequences are devastating.
Those who do this end up defining their lives by the same law the ancient Jews were under, temporarily, with the result they end up thinking like the ancient Jews. It’s why when you tell people that the Bible is not their story but ancient Israel’s story, they are at a loss to know how to respond– what to think next, believe next. And some get really offended, and cry out “But what about us, is the Bible not for us too?” They feel they are being robbed!!

And that’s the core of the problem. They want to be saved from sin like the ancient Jews even though they don't have sin, never were imputed with sin, much less in need of being "saved"!. They imagine themselves as ancient Jews and sinners, and simply just can’t cope with being human beings who aren't "sinners".
This dilemma of mind they bring upon themselves, because they don’t understand who and what they really are. If you are seen to be taking a person’s core beliefs about himself, away from him, he feels vulnerable and starts to kick and scream. You are seen as one who dares to deny him his darling beliefs which he will then proceed to defend with a passion. Yet, all he is doing is defending a false identity; an error of mind.
This “error of mind” usually includes the belief that all are sinners and sin has separated all from God, and God is waiting to punish those who refuse to stop sinning, unless they are "saved". My response is that sin does not exist because the things a man (or woman) gets wrong are not imputed to him as “sin”. They may well constitute "faults", even "wrongs", but Love does not find fault, or keep a record of wrong. Love does not measure what one does against a universal religious standard, and punish those who come short.  Rather, Love recognises that the conscious and conscience need to be left free to evolve and develop through learning. An individual has to be allowed to develop hisjher own sense of what is right or what is wrong, and let that inform his/ her conscience. This is liberty of conscience within overarching Love. The ethic of one who is 'God' is Love, for he IS Love. His "judge and jury" is not law but a sense of what is Love. Love is it's own restraint, just as Love is its own reward. Love allows one to regard his own self with grace.
And Love will one to pursue a course of self-rehabilitation. In this way you evolve in Love. Love allows us to come to an intelligent understanding in seeing and judging for ourselves if something is faulty or wrong and if it is, to reason and resolve the best course of action, preferably one which realistically has everyone’s best interest at heart. If we believe ANYTHING WHATSOEVER could separate us from God, that is an error of mind…..We need to understand what God says we are and let that reality inform our minds.
This, in my opinion, is the reason Jesus came to his people. He came to bring them the TRUTH of who and what they really are. Accepting the truth of who and what we are, leads to a change of mind and peace of mind. That "change of mind", however, does not mean we need to confess to God and ask "forgiveness". God is not somehow injured or grieved because we make errors of mind and choose that which is not good for us. He knows full well we need to grow and that during the process of growing, there will be times when we will mess up. God has foreseen and allowed for every eventuality. What it DOES mean is that we will seek to make amends for those whom we have harmed or injured in the process of daily living.
We need to change our mind from what we have come to think we were, to the truth of what God says we really are! God doesn’t say we are "righteous" or "unrighteous". These are definitions within the human dualism of "good and evil". Even though Jesus exposed and rebuked the religious hypocrisy and bigotry of his day, Jesus never condemned anyone by how they acted … ever! He never called them sinners … ever! By the offering of himself, he removed the imputation of sin from his people, Israel. Through his blood, he removed the basis for consciousness of sin from his people Israel. He replaced alienation from God and a defiled conscience because of sin, with reconciliation with God and an undefiled conscience (Cp 2Cor 5:19-23).
Imo, God doesn’t see us as “good” or “evil”. These are arbitrary measures. They are antithetical to the freedom that is the natural spontaneous evolution of consciousness. We His offspring are evolving in consciousness. Yes, we are offspring of God (cp Acts 17:28). This is what we are, whether we believe it or not! We belong to God. And beieving we belong to God brings peace of mind and enables us to live as ONE. Not per anything we do or don't do physically … but per what we believe we are in relation to God!
With God, how we act has not one thing to do with ''being righteous” or “being unrighteous”  “Righteousness” vs “unrighteousness” is a dualism framed by the human mind struggling to comprehend the incomprehensible. When God sees us He sees only Love; beings that He Loves. It is the religious mind that refuses to grasp we are eternal offspring of God  in His Inescapable Love. By contrast it is the spiritual mind that believes; it recognises and believes God has Love for all and gives His Love to all because God is in all by His Spirit.
Friends, just be the LOVE you know yourself to be. When you believe God is in you, you will then be like God, how you believe your God and Father to be!  If you want evidence of God’s Love for man, then God has already given it you. He revealed His Love 2,000 years ago in the man Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was God's love expression. So are you.Read more Show less

  32. The book Jefferson Bethke writes “Jesus greater than religion” is what lead to to Christ (after being raised Catholic my whole life). I recommend every catholic to read. Catholicism is a work based religion. They fail to realize that we are saved because of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection. And it’s faith alone that we are saved. Once you understand that Christ died for your sinful self, you become born again, saved from Gods wraith, and free from sin. Once you realize this (internally) you will have “works” which is what James is saying in scripture. You don’t have to work to get Gods approval or get into heaven. Because Christ did that for you.

  33. What were two of the arguments the speaker made to counter Jefferson Bethke?

Why does the speaker love Jesus and love religion?

  34. Great, a child MOLESTER/RAPIST giving his points on GOD where he doesn’t know what he’s talking about! Stay on raping children fool!

  35. Well of course a Catholic priest is going to be against Martin Luther and everything this guy advocates. Christ isn't Catholic and would certainly not be welcome at a Catholic church. They would demand that he pledge loyalty to the pope and when He didn't, they would crucify him all over again!!

  36. Thanks for engaging thoughtfully with the video. I agree that Bethke's video is a little bit simplistic and perhaps overreacting to legalism and hypocrisy in the church. Hoewever I think it is very helpful for a bunch of reasons. I disagree with your theology, though. I can not see how you can read Ephesians 2:1-10 and miss the doctrine of salvation by faith through grace. cf Romans 3:23-24. Romans 5:8 , John 6:29, John 3:16. Even the whole theology of the cross. If there is anything we can contribute to our salvation you are saying Jesus death wasnt enough!

  37. What does Jesus make of all this? In Matt 23 Jesus said,

"The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses. 3 So obey everything they teach you, but don’t do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else. 4 They pile heavy burdens on people’s shoulders and won’t lift a finger to help. 5 Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels[a] for everyone to see. 6 They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the meeting places. 7 And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.
8 But none of you should be called a teacher. You have only one teacher, and all of you are like brothers and sisters. 9 Don’t call anyone on earth your father. All of you have the same Father in heaven. 10 None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader. 11 Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others. 12 If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored."

I understand your point on corruption in ALL Christian churches but the view on individual belief is what Jesus is asking for. Not all the "sacraments" or rituals believers ADD on to their belief in Christ as a way to FEEL saved.

What happen with Luther was not just because of the corruption but more over it was God purifying His Church, bringing out His Bride from false doctrines. It will happen again as prophecy has foretold in Rev 18:4, "…And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, (her-are false churches and false doctrines) my people, (my people- are saints, true INDIVIDUAL believers) that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues."

May the Lord Jesus Bless you my brother,
    In Christ,
    Brother Chris

  38. There is a lot of demonizing in the Catholic Church. I was raised Catholic. The way I was taught, divorce wasn't excepted except for maybe for a few reasons. And if you where divorced you wasn't allowed to get married again, at least through the church. Well, I had a friend who's husband left and divorced her for another women and guess what?? He threw enough money and the Catholic Church wed them and the priest knew what that men did. That opened my eyes and realized how the Catholic Church truly is. Now is every priest and church like that? Of course not. Because the priest that retired before I left the church was a wonderful person and I know he was a godly man. But since he was gone different priests within our diocese got caught molesting children. I know there are good people within the Catholic Church but there is a lot of corruption within the leaders of the church. It's about Jesus, not the church.

  39. I am in the middle i think that you can only get into heaven through God but you have to have a relationship with God because you can follow the rules of the bible…oh wait it is impossble but if you have a relationship with God you will become a better person. That is why i ask people do you love God so much that you would live like God would whant you to live like. Ok this is what i sm saying God > rules…God comes first and then you can do nothing but to do the Father's will

  40. The thing is catholics and protestants are fighting a war that means nothing. Let's just talk to each other first…well i do not even go to church atm…look church has become just like politics…i am not interisted in how evil the cathilics or the protestants are i whant to know how i can make sure that both the catholics and protestants go to heaven. POINT can someone give me a direct catholic answer how does one get into heaven

  41. I actually saved this back in 2012 but never watched it until today and I'm really glad that I never did until today. You see, when you are a young Christian/Catholic, I find in our culture we have this need to be standouts within and among our peers. What i mean by that is we need to be the most "on-fire" Christian we can be without necessarily fact checking ourselves. It's a need to out-due each other. This breeds competitiveness and clicks among each other and it's something that i feel needs to be guided right away and taught against. Bishop Barron, you couldn't have said it better than you did. Jesus didn't abolish religion when he came, he abolished corruption and greediness. Yes he said he would tear down the temple, but in three days, he rebuilt it anew and ever better than it would have ever become. I'm so sad that politics are starting to make their way in the church. This, "You believe this so go sit over there" and "You aren't the right demographic so go sit over there to be used at a different time" is destroying churches and making them a status symbol or a latest trend. . These "False Prophets" are going to be the downfall of man. So in closing, I really pitty this young man who is clearly on fire for God but is very miss guided and miss taught. He needs to be taught differently. And with time, maturity, and knowledge about God and our Bible, he might actually be a good tool for Jesus to help people. Anyways, good video and God Bless!

  42. I'm a traditional cradle Catholic . This video greatly confuses me. It goes against the talk Dr Tim Gray give on the Catholic Lighthouse CD, called Religionless Spirituality.

  43. >>Bishop Barron on "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus"
    >So, then, why don't you hate first your 'Catholic' religion to show that you really mean it??? ARe you saying that 'CAtholic' is NOT religion??? Haha! ONE-SIDED TESTIMONY there is something behind it, hidden!

  44. ugh, there goes another catholic quoting scripture out of context again to reinforce their own religious churchianity. This its why it is so important to know and understand scripture yourself. Here you have someone who you would naturally think "knows more than you about the Bible because it's his job" and then he grossly twists scripture to fit his narrative. Way to completely teach false doctrine about what Jesus meant by "I didn't come to abolish the law but fulfill it." Shame on you. People, read he bible for yourself. Matthew 5:17-20. He's talking about Moses and Old Testament law which was the old covenant. Jesus' death and resurrection marks the beginning of a new covenant under the law thus making the old obsolete. This is what he means by he didn't come to abolish the law, but fulfill it. The whole New Testament talks about Jesus correcting people that were trying to adhere to Old Testament law. Just read your bible people and stop falling for false doctrine by false teachers.

  45. I can’t hear anything from a catholic priest. They all turn out to be child abusers. Sick. I will never listen to a catholic They we’re not the first religion and they won’t be the last. Fact is god is not a religion. He is love

  46. thank you Bishop Barron for guarding the Faith! Praise God for the Magisterium that stand for the infalliable and uncorruptable teaching of the Catholic Faith! God bless you!

  47. No matter what or how we translate the Scriptures, everyone should know that upon every Tree an Axe had been Put, meaning " No man will speak for my behalf " I am responsible for myself. With love I’m sharing. May The Lord Jesus Christ give you the strength to understand. Amen.

  48. This will change your life forever today. For Christians on
youtube : 1woksape Catholic spiritual warfare

  49. This guy is so wrong. @ 5:50 when Jesus said he will rebuild the temple he didn’t mean the temple that he over threw the tables in! The temple he was speaking of was his body John 2:21 even says this! Everyone go read it for yourself. DO NOT listen to this guy! He is a trying do deceive you by twisting scripture making it seem like it was a figure of speech. Jesus also said Matthew 23:9 “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” Yet this dude and all catholic priests are called “father”. That poem is correct only by grace are you saved. Not of works. No man will be justified by works. I have a big problem with Catholics because they deceive and twist scripture they are NOT Christian.

  50. Unfortuantely it seems you miss the mark on what this young man is saying. He clearly states (although brief) that he “believes in the Church” and that “feeding the poor” is the evidence of God’s grace. What religion tries to assert is that the Church and feeding the poor (ritual and good works) is a the means of God’s grace. Beware of any institution or individual (church or church leader) who tries to take away from the all sufficient, complete and finished work of Christ. Accept what Christ has done alone as the only means of salvation – a restored relationship with the only true God and “Father” who loves us and accepts us as sons (Luke 15).

  51. We should simply live like Jesus and not identify as a religion. With religion comes war and persecution. Everyone is against everyone. We should be trying to be brothers and sisters rather than enemies. And the only way to do this is to live the perfect life of Jesus. God bless all of you brothers and sisters stay blessed✝️

  52. If your born free, and you get conned into giving up some or many freedoms.
You are stupid…easily conned out of your efforts and money… your conned to think they know what a magical being is say to them, not you.

  53. I have tremendous respect for Bishop Barren and agree with most of what he’s saying here in this short video, but I think he’s missing both what Luther and Bethke are advocating. Faith in Jesus, your personal profession of faith in the righteousness of Jesus and God’s plan of salvation through Him, is what saves you; not sacraments. Jesus said to Peter after his declaration of faith which professed Jesus to be the Son of God is the profession of faith that builds the church. Our personal salvation in Jesus makes us the living stones upon which the church is being built up. Both Luther and Bethke were for the church and in no way divorcing faith in Jesus apart from His body. They both are advocating that salvation first and foremost comes through faith in the faithfulness of Jesus. The ritual practices of the Catholic Church cannot save a person. Only the faith of the person being placed in Jesus is what saves people. God, in exchange for our faith, gives us his grace that cannot not be earned nor received through sacraments. These are purely man made doctrines and not rooted in Scripture. But are the traditions of men.

  54. I went to a private evangelical high school and the guy in that video came and talked to us during our "revival" week. It was just the same old "if you just accept Jesus into your heart you're good enough for heaven no matter what blah blah blah…" I find Catholicism far more fulfilling.

  55. The poem is against the corruption of religion today. Holding the Catholic Church with such esteem that you do not point out any of the modern corruption. One does not need an ally in you if you cannot stand against the corruption. You do not need religion to have a spiritual life. Using the term the REAL Jesus seems to lay claim through you religious understanding to an entity that others experience in some false form. Better to say the Jesus I know and love and of which I have learned. Claiming to know the REAL Jesus is part of the problem. Your understanding my differ from others and may hold more water at times. Yet, the very protection of your understanding is a protection of something temporal and finite, and for something real. Jesus is not real in human terms or experience when he is taking on the identity of Christ. It is merely a name used to approximate what has occurred. We do not know what is real and should never claim to do so.

  56. Robert Barron, you don't love Jesus, stop telling lies.
If you Catholics love Jesus, you wouldn't twist the scriptures, call God a liar and insulted Jesus and what He has done for us.
And I can prove that Catholics do those things.
To love Jesus with the Agape love of God, a person has to be born again the Biblical way, and Catholics aren't born again the Biblical way.
If a Catholic ever got saved, they would leave the erroneous Catholic church, because the Holy Spirit in them will convict them of the errors in the Catholic church.
BTW, James isn't taking about works to justify for salvation, the naughty Catholics twist what James said.

  57. I’m an evangelical United Methodist pastor. Love your videos. Love the beginning and conclusion of this video. However, your middle section would have been stronger if you had included a more complete picture of the internal Protestant faith/works conversation. You completely ignored the largest part of it: the Holiness Movement where works are the product of a healthy and vital faith in Jesus Christ. Would love to hear a series of videos on the Holiness Movement within the Church (Anglican/Wesleyan/Pentecostal).

  58. Of all the celebrities I have a great appreciation for, I must admit I couldn't care less about meeting them but this guy I wanna shake hands with and say thank you.

  59. Jesus say's do not call no one father except your father in heaven or your father in heaven.Jesus say's do not confess your sins to no one except your father in heaven through me.Jesus say's do not follow men in long robes but your father in heaven. Jesus wasn't catholic and he came to abolish religion.

  60. Jesus wants a real war and he's going to get one. Those who desire a real God will get one as well once the war is over.

  61. Very well said and agree. Could have been said without taking a pot shot at evangelical Christians. Expect better of all church leaders to help heal the wounds in our nation.

  62. This guy "the priest" is trying to protect his lifestyle choice of being a priest without being objective and reading the word for himself.

  63. from a protestant point of view, the strength of the catholic church is that it provides a delineated path to sanctification. protestants show no clear path forward after believing in christ and you get stuck in an endless cycle of going nowhere. it's basically something like: believe in jesus and then be the best capitalist you can be. however, i will add, if you can only see justification by faith in the book of james you're either blind or lying. the first eight chapters of romans is about that topic almost exclusively.
