Ten Reasons to Plant a Church, Part 10

Our soul winning passage from the Word of God today is Philemon 1:6 which reads: “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”

Allow me to share with you some insights regarding this Scripture from David Guzik’s Commentaries on the Bible:

Paul prayed for Philemon, desiring that the sharing of his faith would become effective as Philemon understood the work God did in him (every good thing which is in you).

This is the foundation for all effective evangelism: the overflow of a life touched and changed by God. God had done every good thing in the life of Philemon. Now, it was a matter of it being acknowledged by both Philemon and those he shared the faith with. When these good things were understood, others would come to Jesus. The reason why some sharing of the faith is not effective is because we don’t know or can’t communicate every good thing God has done for us.

It is possible that Paul means the sharing of material things, prompted by faith. The ancient Greek word for sharing is koinonia, and sometimes Paul used koinonia, which means “fellowship, sharing,” to describe giving.

Our soul winning quote today is from Oswald J. Smith. He said: “Any church that is not seriously involved in helping fulfill the Great Commission has forfeited its biblical right to exist.”

Ten Reasons to Plant a Church (Part 10)

10. “Storm the Gates!”

Too many Christians and churches have gone on into hiding. We have retreated to our Christian ghettos, going to our Christian schools, listening to our Christian radio stations, and hanging out with only our Christian friends. As the culture moves further from biblical values, we retreat further from the culture. And it breaks Jesus’ heart.

In Matthew 16, Jesus was giving His disciples an opportunity to grasp a deep understanding of His identity and, thereby, a clearer comprehension of their destiny. In verse 18, He gives a statement which has become known as the Great Promise: “I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

This promise clearly states that, because Jesus is the church builder, the church is an unstoppable force that must storm the gates of hell! We are not to be passive cowards who are hunkered down in fear of the world around us. We are to be a militant, aggressive army on the offensive for God, working to rescue captives from hell.

Nothing causes the enemy to sit up and take notice as much as the start of a new church that is willing to penetrate the culture, identify with the captives, and kick down the very gates of hell, if that is what it takes. Every church planter I know has come face-to-face with severe spiritual warfare. But they also tell me that the trials they have faced have been small prices to pay in exchange for the great joy of seeing souls set free.

In our next podcast, we will look at Evangelism In the Early Church.

* * * * * * * * Let’s Pray * * * * * * * *

Dear friend, if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, may I encourage you to get to know Him today.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time,
